TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
My name is Philip Richard Cross. I, along with a small group of
community volunteers took the opportunity to become specially trained
in delivering a program using Ron Phillips' book Gem of the First
Water as a learning resource. The programs I was trained to deliver
using this resource were "Dare to Make a Change" and "Hikoi
ki te Hauora (Journey to Health / Wellbeing)".
Four years ago the Hikoi or Journey program was delivered at the
Kaitaia College as a pilot program. I was part of a small team
who presented this "Therapeutic Story Telling Intervention"
learning, using Gem of the First Water as the resource, to a small
group of first year secondary school students, and at times to
a full class of 20 plus students. This program was delivered within
the boundaries of the secondary schools' health curriculum. Also
at this time the resource and program was delivered by community
facilitator on a "one to one" basis to a student, who, it
was felt by the College professionals, would benefit by this special
attention.
It was my experience that the adolescent students I had the good
fortune to present this T.S.I. learning process and program to,
seemed to be able to relate well to the messages that were being
delivered. It is also my belief that the Kaitaia College has endorsed
the success of the program that incorporates this T.S.I. process
together with Ron Phillips', Gem of the First Water, evidenced
by the fact that the College are still using this resource and
program as an integral part of the College's existing health curriculum
for all first year secondary students.
I am prepared to be contacted personally if required to discuss
this further.
