In Service Training Guidelines

Welcome!

  • You and your year 9 students are about to embark on a journey of self-discovery.
  • As the teacher of the class, your role will be to guide these young people as they travel through Hikoi ki te Hauora - Journey to Wellbeing.
  • You and your students are the most important people in the implementation of this programme. This sub-site is dedicated to helping you and your students in the implementation.

Checklist (Any enquiries: free phone 0800 22 77 32)

Teacher's Manual

  • Bound colour copies are available from YouthHealth at $30.00.
  • Downloadable colour copies are available free from this site provided you have registered and have the necessary code.
  • CD-ROM copies available from YouthHealth.

Gem of the First Water

Books, CD's and tapes available as required. Discuss your needs with our Education Services at the above toll free number (refer to the manual supplement available on this web site).

Reminders

  • Your experience will help you appreciate the importance of reading the teacher's handbook and Gem of the First Water. This preparation will enable you to be familiar with the type of journey you and your students will be traveling on together.
  • You will find in the first 28 pages of the handbook the philosophy behind the programme and an outline of the presentation. We recommend you also take a few minutes to read Sections 1 to 3 of YouthHealth – A Shared Vision For Our Youth to become familiar with the wider context in which this programme takes a significant place.
  • The teacher's manual is divided into sessions. Sessions do not represent a single teaching period. The activities in each session build on each other, some could be omitted. We recommend you select activities that best represent the key concepts, and the needs of your students.
  • Each session has one or more "Key Concepts." We recommend:
    (a) these be either written on the board at the beginning of each lesson, or made into cards and displayed in your classroom, and
    (b) the students write them in their books.

Support Systems

  • Remember to advise the principal of the implementation of Hikoi ki te Hauora in your school.
  • It is recommended that you discuss Hikoi ki te Hauora with your School Guidance Counsellor, RTLB and appropriate support staff, so that they are familiar with the programme.

Encourage them to preview the resource and invite them to be part of a support system for you and your students.

Sometimes students want to access additional support if something on their personal life journey is troubling them.
  • Make sure you have the YouthNet wallet cards for every student. These point students to www.4YouthToday.com (see handbook, supplement at back, page 91). The cards also give a toll free number for recorded messages designed to help students make contact with counselling services. There is no charge for these.
  • To find out how other teachers use this resource, please read Reported Classroom Experiences.
  • You are always welcome to telephone YouthHealth for advice or assistance: 0800 22 77 32.

You are only a phone call away from help and support.
