Using the Programme
- This programme has been designed for use at Year 9 (levels 4
and 5) of Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum
(1999).
- The sessions and activities in Hikoi ki te Hauora are set in
sequence and it is suggested that teachers follow this sequence.
It is important for teachers to note that sessions do not equate
with a given timeframe.
- Each session contains a range of possible learning activities.
Teachers are encouraged to take into account the needs of their
students and their community in the implementation of this programme.
- This programme needs to be presented in a way that enables young
people to explore realistic and achievable goals for themselves
that take into account the reality of the world around them and
the challenges they face.
- A programme planning guide is provided on the next page.
- Teachers can use the suggested activities or modify them according
to the needs of their students and the time available.
- Hikoi ki te Hauora encourages students to engage in a process
of self-reflection, self-awareness, self-appraisal and self-advocacy.
It is important that students have a way of recording this process
through the use of personal exercise books, creative activities
and visual images.
- When selecting or developing learning outcomes, teachers will
need to consider what is appropriate to the needs of the students.
It is also important to distance assessment tasks from the students'
personal experiences by allowing them to refer to "people"
or "individuals" rather than themselves. When students
share personal experiences, they are sharing their truth and this
should not be open to judgement through assessment.
