Information for Parents
and Carers
Hikoi ki te Hauora (Journey
to Wellbeing) has been funded by community donations for use within
the school curriculum. The programme was originally developed by
Safer Streets Trust through the Mental Health Foundation of N.Z.
Hikoi ki te Hauora is a health
education and life skills resource which will help students recognise
their own abilities and strengths and further improve these in
preparation for life as a teenager or young adult. As such it builds
resiliency and empowers young people to make responsible decisions.
Your son or daughter will also be helped to identify the importance
of healthy families, respect for their own culture and the important
services they can use within our community.
This programme uses a very powerful book, "Gem of the First
Water", written by the acclaimed family therapist Ron Phillips.
Due to the wide interest in this book, YouthNet is making it available
for parents who would like to increase their own understanding
of the messages presented.
Although it is not directly related to Hikoi
ki te Hauora, YouthNet is also making available a handbook "Journey
Guide" for parents and carers who wish to understand how
to apply ideas from "Gem" in the home. This is supplied
free of charge with each copy of "Gem" purchased on
this order form.
If you would like to purchase "Gem of the First Water" or "Journey
Guide", please click
